Fuller had been found dead with a rope around his neck on a tree near the town hall in Palmdale, about 95 kilometers northeast of Los Angeles. The weekend after his death, thousands of demonstrators called for a thorough investigation. The authorities said shortly after the body was found that it was suicide. Then, however, they opened an investigation.
The circumstances surrounding Fuller’s death had raised bad memories of the racist lynching of US history. The case also received a lot of attention against the backdrop of nationwide anti-racism protests. The protests were sparked by the death of African-American George Floyd in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in late May.
