The “FC Hollywood” will soon really exist: As the US Women’s League NWSL announced on Tuesday, a very prominent consortium has secured the exclusive right to launch a club in Los Angeles for the 2022 season. The predominantly female group is called “Angel City”, the official name of the franchise is to be announced by the end of the year. It would be the eleventh club in the professional league.
The consortium hides other Oscar winners Natalie Portman, tennis superstar Serena Williams, actresses Jennifer Garner and Eva Longoria and former US football idol Mia Hamm. Alexis Ohanian, venture capitalist and husband of the 23-time Grand Slam winner Williams, is also there.
Ohanian said: “I am proud to be part of this wonderful group that is committed to bringing a women’s professional football club to Los Angeles. As someone who spends hours playing football with my two-year-old daughter I want her to be in the front row of this revolution. ” Together with his wife Serena, he wants to “create more opportunities in women’s sports, and we want to make a contribution to giving our daughter a better future,” added Ohanian.
NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird said: “Given the existing NWSL fan base in the region and massive interest in women’s football in general, we have been looking for the right partner in LA for a long time. These factors, together with an incredible group of owners, make this an ideal situation “and we couldn’t be more excited to move forward”.
