750 crew members were flown in from Asia – now the shipping company Aida Cruises has to cancel their planned mini-cruises on the Baltic Sea. One of the necessary releases is still pending.
Rostock (dpa) – The cruise line Aida Cruises has postponed its restart for a short time after the Corona forced break. The planned mini cruises on the Baltic Sea for the first half of August were canceled on Sunday.
Contrary to the company’s expectations, Aida has yet to give formal approval for the start of short trips from August 5 through the flag state of Italy, said Aida at its headquarters in Rostock.
This is a major setback for Aida Cruises. After the corona-related mandatory break, the company had wanted to pick up speed since August 5, mid-March, initially with mini cruises on the Baltic Sea without shore leave. Comprehensive concepts were developed for the new start and all increased hygiene standards and measures to protect against Covid-19 were implemented on board the ships.
The short trips with the Aidaperla from / to Hamburg were canceled from August 5th to August 8th, from August 8th to 12th and from August 12th to 15th. The short cruise with the Aidamar from / to Warnemünde from August 12th to 16th is also affected. Aida assumes that the planned trips from August 16 will take place, as a spokesman for the German Press Agency said.
“Aida very much regrets this delay,” it said. The company assumes that it will receive the last formal approval by the flag state of Italy in a timely manner.
For the restart, Aida had flown in 750 crew members from Asia on July 22 with three planes. Corona tests after landing revealed 11 infected people who were subsequently isolated.
