Arrested for negligence by causing the Valdepiélagos fire with his car


Madrid, Aug 2 (EFE) .- A 44-year-old man has been arrested for gross negligence for having caused the fire in the Madrid town of Valdepiélagos, which spread to Guadalajara and which has left some 900 hectares destroyed.

As Efe sources in the Civil Guard Command have informed Efe, once SEPRONA verified the origin of the fire, which started when a vehicle burned on a road near Valdepiélagos, its owner was arrested yesterday, since the car was in “poor” maintenance conditions.

The man was arrested yesterday afternoon for gross negligence, and after giving a statement, he was released pending his call to testify by the judge.

The fire originated around eleven-thirty in the morning of this Saturday in the vehicle of the detainee, which lit the grass next to the asphalt and, from there, spread through the cereal field.

Due to the rapid evolution at 3.30 p.m. it was decided to vacate the Lago del Jaral urbanization in Guadalajara, and somewhat later the 80 residents of the El Frontal urbanization in Madrid.

In this last urbanization a prefabricated house and several gardens of other houses burned, although there were no wounded to regret.

Most of the burned hectares are agricultural land, although there is part of forest land, and half has burned in the Community of Madrid and the other half in Castilla-La Mancha.

In the extinction, six helicopters have worked, about twelve land crews of firefighters from Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha and it has been necessary to ask the Ministry of the Environment to use two hydroplanes.
