According to the Warsaw government, “at least one thousand” US soldiers will be transferred to Poland in the course of the announced massive US troop withdrawal from Germany. Defense minister Mariusz Blaszczak said on Friday that Jedynka, a public service radio broadcaster, would set up a US commando that would be responsible for troops deployed on NATO’s entire eastern flank.

Blaszczak added on Twitter that negotiations with the United States on a declaration of military cooperation have been completed. The US Army’s “permanent presence” contract will be signed “soon”.

The USA announced the withdrawal of around 12,000 soldiers from Germany on Wednesday. Some of them are expected to return to the USA, some are to be relocated to other European countries, including Italy. The US headquarters for Europe is to be relocated from Stuttgart to Belgium. Trump justified his step, among other things, with insufficient financial contributions from Germany in the military sector.

According to the Federal Government, the locations in Stuttgart in Baden-Württemberg, Vilseck in Bavaria and Spangdahlem in Rhineland-Palatinate are particularly affected.

Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) has meanwhile announced talks with the affected federal states. “As for the unfortunate withdrawal plans of the US troops, I will invite the prime ministers of the countries concerned at the beginning of the session after the summer,” said Kramp-Karrenbauer on Friday. It should be discussed how the Bundeswehr can support the relevant regions.
