Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt has not yet presented itself in the form of a European Cup when it meets its former coach Niko Kovac.
Against AS Monaco, the Hessians only got 1-1 in the dress rehearsal for the round of 16 second leg of the Europa League at FC Basel (6 August). Goncalo Paciencia (58.) scored on his 26th birthday for Frankfurt, Anthony Musaba (85.) equalized.
The equalization was preceded by a mistake by SBU defender Evan N’Dicka. Willem Geubbels’ return pass was much too short. The striker did not get the ball past Eintracht goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, however, the rebound put Musaba into the goal.
The form test against Monegassen and Kovac, which had won the DFB Cup with the SBU 2018, was only of limited significance. Because Frankfurt has only been in team training since Wednesday and coach Adi Hütter changed as announced during the break.
In the better first half, almost exclusively the team that was supposed to turn the 0: 3 from the first leg on Thursday in Basel was allowed to run. Only playmaker Daichi Kamada and clearer Sebastian Rode belonged to the regular team of the team that received their probation in the second round.
Kovac returns to Frankfurt
Kovac, who was presented on July 19 as the coach of the eight-time French champion, returned to the Main for the first time since November 2, 2019. At that time, he had suffered a violent 1: 5 bankruptcy as Bayern Munich coach, it was the beginning of the end at the record champions – the day after he was released. On the Cote d’Azur, he now wants to form a team that series champion Paris Saint-Germain can challenge in the fight for the championship.
They don’t waste any thought on possible titles in Frankfurt, however, after the weak first leg against Basel on March 12th, that’s forbidden. Even if the Hessians make the impossible possible and still reach the final tournament of the Europa League in North Rhine-Westphalia, the way to their second triumph after 1980 would be long.
