British Airways pilots vote for hard cuts due to corona crisis

British Airways pilots have accepted harsh cuts in salaries and employment because of the Corona crisis. A large majority of the 4,300 pilots agreed to an agreement with the company’s management, the Balpa union said on Friday evening. According to the agreement, pilot salaries will be cut by 20 percent and 270 jobs will be cut.

The airline is struggling with the economic impact of the corona pandemic. In the meantime, passenger air traffic in Europe and many other parts of the world had almost stopped. British Aiways therefore originally proposed the dismissal of 12,000 employees, including more than 1200 pilots.

Instead, the pilots now accepted a 20 percent reduction in salary, followed by two years with an eight percent reduction in salary. Union leader Brian Strutton spoke of a “pragmatic decision”.
