Cruz Azul draws agonizing draw from visit in Mexican tournament

MEXICO CITY, Jul 31 (Reuters) – Cruz Azul, one of the most popular clubs in Mexican soccer, rescued a 1-1 draw on Friday in the last minute of his visit to Puebla at the start of the second day.

With the equalizer, both clubs occupy the first places in the tournament with four points.

“I do not believe in luck, the team works from the kick-off, we propose to go for the game, always on the rival field, have a leading role, have the ball, look for the goal in front. It was not fortune, the team did everything possible to make goals, “said Cruz Azul technical director, Uruguayan Robert Dante Siboldi.

Puebla took the lead in the 47th minute when Pablo González defined with a powerful shot inside the area after a weak defensive clearance.

Cruz Azul got the equalizer in the 91st minute through Orbelín Pineda, who put the ball in the left corner with a shot at the entrance to the area after a defensive deflection.

A minute later, Puebla was left with one less man for the expulsion of Uruguayan striker Christian Tabó, who saw the red card after throwing a blow at an opponent.

“The team never lowered its arms, it is a team that surrenders and does not give up a lost ball. It has talent, a winning mystique and constant dedication,” said Siboldi.

In the other match on Friday, Bravos de Ciudad Juárez beat Necaxa 1-0 with a goal from Ecuadorian Eryc Castillo.

On Saturday, Tigres UANL will be local against Pachuca and América will play against Tijuana. A day later the Toluca-Atlético San Luis, Querétaro-Mazatlán and Santos Laguna-Guadalajara matches will be played.

The day will be completed on Monday when Atlas is a rival to Pumas UNAM and the current champion Monterrey visits León.
