An ex-BVB star shoots the Gunners to Europe:
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang led the English record cup winner FC Arsenal to their 14th triumph in the FA Cup. With two goals, the ex-Dortmund player decided the final of the oldest soccer cup competition in the world and secured the Gunners a 2-1 (0-1) win against Chelsea.
After the disappointing eighth place in the Premier League, Arsenal moved into the Europa League – again without Rio world champion Mesut Özil. (the game for reading in LIVETICKER)
Aubameyang equalized by penalty (28th) and made the decision after the break (67th). His former BVB teammate Christian Pulisic had already given Chelsea the lead in the fifth minute.
The blues around national player Antonio Rüdiger, who lost Mateo Kovacic with yellow-red in the final phase (73.), missed a golden conclusion to the successful debut season of club legend Frank Lampard on the coaching bench. However, they had already qualified for the Champions League in fourth.
After the early deficit, Arsenal needed a quarter of an hour to get into the game. With his speed and his cold-temperedness, Aubameyang compensated. Cesar Azpilicueta could only stop the Gabonese with a grip on the shoulder. Aubameyang confidently converted the penalty, which also withstood the video evidence.
The Gunners almost got another penalty just before the break, but Nicolas Pepe fell just before the penalty area. Alexandre Lacazette’s free kick went wide. Aubameyang rewarded Arsenal in the second round for the performance increase with the winning goal.
National player Timo Werner, who switched from RB Leipzig to the Blues for 53 million euros, already belonged to the Chelsea team in the empty Wembley Stadium. The 24-year-old, who is foregoing the final tournament of the Champions League with the Saxons, is not yet eligible to play for his new club.
At Arsenal, Özil was again not part of the squad. The 2014 world champion, who is still under contract for one year in London, wasn’t even a minute after the corona break. Shkodran Mustafi was also absent after a thigh operation.
