Foot – Disappearance – From Dunkirk to Brest, the career of “Sir Alex” Dupont in pictures

Former coach of Dunkirk, Gueugnon, Sedan and Brest, among others, Alex Dupont died overnight from Friday to Saturday at the age of 66. Back to his (rich) career in pictures. Alex Dupont was born in Dunkirk in 1954, and it is in this city that he launched his playing career (here in 1981). Midfielder, he played in Dunkirk from 1972 to 1975 and from 1979 to 1983. In the meantime, he played in Hazebrouck. Then, in 1984, he converted as a trainer, took over the Dunkirk club after filing for bankruptcy and managed to keep it in D2. After Dunkirk, and a stint in Boulogne (1996-1997), Dupont landed in Gueugnon in 1998. From his second season in Saône-et-Loire, he achieved the feat of winning the Coupe de la Ligue in 2000 with a club from D2, against PSG (2-0). He is the only one to have accomplished it in the twenty-six years of the competition. After this title, the technician is visiting the premises of L’Équipe for an interview. The return to Gueugnon is triumphant. And synonymous with takeoff for Dupont, who took the direction of Sedan. In one season in the Ardennes, and despite the lower budget of the elite, Dupont continues to amaze by finishing fifth in the Championship and by qualifying his team in the European Cup (UEFA Cup). In the process, Dupont flies to the Middle East to join the staff of the Olympic selection of Qatar. His mission is to put his expertise and experience to the benefit of a nation already turned towards football. Return to France in 2004, with a short stint at Laval, which he managed to maintain, and two seasons at Amiens (photo). After a new exile, this time with the United Arab Emirates Hopes (2006-2007), and an express return to Gueugnon (2007-2008), Dupont relaunched his coaching career by joining Brest in 2009. He first saved the club, then in Ligue 2, in 2009, then obtained the rise in Ligue 1 only one year later (here on the left during the preparation of the Brestois in the summer of 2010). At the head of Brest from 2009 to 2012, Dupont then made an inconclusive stint in Ajaccio (from June to December 2012). Dupont then returns to the head of Brest, again for three years (2013-2016). But, this time, he fails to bring the club back up. During his last seasons, he crossed paths with Olivier Dall’Oglio’s Dijon on several occasions. Who, today, is the coach of Brest …
