Andy Lonergan, last season’s number three goal in Liverpool FC, is probably happy that it’s summer break for now. Or rather, that he can no longer meet Xherdan Shaqiri in training.
“The one I really don’t like to play against is Shaqiri,” said Lonergan, who was in Jürgen Klopp’s squad at eight competitive games and possibly extended his contract, which expired on August 1, by another year Liverpool Echo. A very special quality of the former Bayern star had spread fear and terror among the 36-year-old.
“Shaqiri can do what he wants with this left foot”
“If he shoots, he can do what he wants with this left foot,” said Lonergan, who came to Liverpool from Middlesbroug in summer 2019. “When we played five against five in training, I always thought: ‘Please be on my team.’ Because if he plays against you, he’s a little magician with his graduation. “
Despite his magical left foot, Shaqiri hardly played a role at Liverpool in the past season. The 28-year-old Swiss won just eleven competitive appearances and only contributed one goal to winning the title in the Premier League (5-2 against Everton in December last year).
Shaqiri switched from Stoke City to Anfield Road in 2018. His contract in Liverpool runs until summer 2023.
