Nemanja Matic is determined to win the Premier League title with Manchester United and claims he and his teammates “cannot allow” Liverpool to win the championship with seven days remaining, as they did in 2019 -20.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season, in 2013, United have not been able to fight for the league title. This season, the Red Devils were fifth in the table before embarking on a run for third, after 14 games unbeaten, beating Leicester City on the final day to secure a place in the Champions League.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, however, finished 15 points behind rivals City and 33 points behind champions Liverpool, but Nemanja Matic believes they should aim to put pressure on the top two in the 2020-2021 campaign. .
“I personally would like to win the Premier League with Manchester United. I think our club still have to fight for the title”, the 32-year-old said in an interview with the club’s magazine, Inside United.
“We always have to try to do the best for this club, which we are doing right now, and I think we can’t allow any club to win the league with seven or ten match days remaining. So we have to fight. until the end.
“Of course we have a young team, but that can’t be an excuse. I think these young players are already a few seasons behind. So from next season we have to fight for the title. I don’t know if we’re going to win, but I’m sure we can fight until the end.
“It’s my personal goal and I think the rest of my teammates think the same.”
United’s domestic campaign is over, but the team will return to Europa League service next week, with a meeting against LASK in the second leg of their round of 16. United won 5-0 in the first leg in Austria, with Odion Ighalo, Daniel James, Juan Mata, Mason Greenwood and Andreas Pereira all finding their way to the net.
