The Tennis Masters in the Spanish capital Madrid is about to be canceled. The organizers announced this in a communication following a corresponding recommendation from the regional government. A final decision had not yet been made, however, that was with Ion Tiriac and his company Super Slam Ltd., owner of the tournament license.
The organizers of the major event for women and men, which is supposed to take place from 12 to 20 September after a postponement, said they had last contacted Antonio Zapatero because of their concerns. The Corona expert, deputy secretary for public health in Madrid, spoke out in favor of canceling the event.
Recently the numbers in Spain had risen sharply, there were more than 2000 positive corona tests per day. Over 288,000 cases have been reported since the pandemic began, with 28,445 deaths on Friday.
“The organizers carefully analyze and evaluate all possible options and always focus on ensuring the safety of everyone involved,” the statement said.
