Far too many women are exposed to the violence of their partners. Exact numbers are not available, there is a huge dark field. But there is also domestic violence against men. A lawyer from Rostock says a phenomenon that has hardly been researched.
Rostock (dpa) – According to the legal doctor Verena Kolbe, men are much more likely to be victims of domestic violence than official figures suggest.
The subject was highly shamed by those affected and they therefore rarely reported these offenses, explained the specialist at the Institute for Forensic Medicine in Rostock University.
Kolbe therefore called for emergency services, emergency rooms and resident doctors to look for traces of domestic violence in men too. Affected men should know that their needs are treated the same as women. She reported about this together with the head of forensic medicine at Rostock University, Andreas Büttner, in the “German Medical Journal” (Monday).
According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, 324 women and 97 men were victims of attempted and accomplished killings by their (ex) partners in 2018. In the same year, around 26,000 men were victims of domestic violence across Germany, according to this information, but the offense was committed against 114,000 women.
It can be observed that a large part of the men affected by violence had previously become violent against the partner, said Kolbe. At the same time, up to 40 percent of the men affected were victims of abuse or abuse in childhood.
According to Kolbe, violence against men and the accompanying risk factors have been little researched. Special training for medical personnel, the further development of prevention work and a special offer for affected men are desirable.
