The Mexican authorities have managed to beat organized crime. Cartel boss José Antonio Yépez, called “El Marro”, was arrested early Sunday morning (local time) during a military operation in the state of Guanajuato, representatives of the provincial and central government said on Twitter. The head of the powerful Santa Rosa de Lima cartel was considered one of the most wanted criminals in the country.
The criminal group specializes in tapping pipelines to sell the stolen oil on the black market. According to the federal minister responsible for internal security, Alfonso Durazo, Yépez was taken to a high security prison to be brought before a federal judge. The arrest warrant was “organized crime and fuel theft.”
Last week José Guadalupe, aka “El Mamey”, a senior member of the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel, was also arrested in Guanajuato. In June, the mother and sister of “El Marro” were among the 30 arrested members of the cartel. The two women were released a few days later after saying in a video message that they had been tortured.
Guanajuato is an important industrial center in Mexico. In addition to Santa Rosa de Lima, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel also operates in the area. The two rival groups are embroiled in a bloody conflict that has made the state one of the most violent in the country.
