The French public prosecutor has asked the responsible magistrate to reopen the investigation into film star Gérard Depardieu on charges of rape.

The AFP news agency learned this on Saturday from judicial circles in Paris. Depardieu has always denied the allegations.

A young actress and dancer accuses the 71-year-old of having sexually abused her twice in August 2018. She filed a complaint in the same month, but investigations triggered by it were terminated in June 2019. The Paris public prosecutor said at the time that there were no indications of Depardieu’s possible crimes.

No comment from Depardieu’s lawyer

Now, however, the actress has filed a more stringent lawsuit, according to information from legal circles, which is why new investigations are necessary. Depardieus, the lawyer contacted by AFP, did not want to comment on the new developments.

Depardieu celebrated international successes, for example in the role of Obelix in the “Asterix” films and as a hero in costume dramas such as “Cyrano von Bergerac”. For this he was also nominated for an Oscar.
