Maurizio Sarri’s Juventus have recorded the worst Serie A statistics of their last nine seasons when the club won the title. Sarri’s men won the Scudetto with two games remaining, but benefited greatly from the irregular form of their main rivals in the title race, Inter, Atalanta and Lazio.
The Bianconeri have achieved just two wins in their last eight games and ended the campaign with back-to-back losses to Cagliari and Roma.
After concluding their domestic program with a 3-1 home loss to the Giallarossi, Sarri admitted his team’s motivation level had waned. As he prepares to play in the Champions League round of 16 against Lyon, the Italian boss said Juve knew the title was all but won after last month’s win over Lazio.
“A little fear can do us good. After Lazio we felt the championship was won and we experienced mental decline.”Sarri told reporters.
The truth is, Juve failed to reach the same heights as in previous years throughout the season, which is reflected in the final points tally.
Her final tally of 83 is the lowest she has ever achieved in the past decade, and she has also conceded more goals than in her previous eight titles – 43. Juve recorded their worst difference goals of this period (+33), as well as the greatest number of defeats (seven) and the smallest point difference with his runner-up (only one).
To make matters worse, the Turin side lost 21 points after leading in the score, more than any other champion team in Serie A history, beating Roma’s previous mark of 20 points set in 1982-83 .
Sarri also saw his side defeated in the Super Cup and Italian Cup final, but he could end up silencing many of his critics if he manages to win the Champions League this month.
Juve have not won the competition since 1996, and will overthrow Lyon, winner 1-0 in the round of 16 first leg five months ago. In case of qualification, the Bianconeri will be rewarded with a shock in the quarterfinals against Real Madrid or Manchester City. An entire program.
