several cities make the mask compulsory in the street

Several cities in France have decided to make the wearing of masks compulsory in certain parts of the public space in order to stem the resurgence of the epidemic of Covid-19.

The prefect of the North thus decreed, Friday July 31, the obligation to wear a mask “in a number of areas” of the metropolis of Lille (North), in particular the pedestrian streets, the open-air markets and the green spaces.

The mayor of Biarritz defended a similar measure on Saturday morning for the densest districts of his city. “We do it because our major concern is to protect the Biarrots, to protect summer visitors, and above all to protect families (…)”, explained on BFM Business Maider Arosteguy, mayor of Biarritz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques). She said she wanted to proceed by educational incentive rather than by ticket.

An upcoming order in certain streets of Nice

Wearing a mask was also made compulsory, as of this Saturday, in the heart of the city of Touquet-Paris-Plage (Pas-de-Calais). Violators are liable to a fine.

In a tweet posted on Friday evening, the mayor of Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), Christian Estrosi, said he had asked the prefect to “take a prefectural decree”, from Monday midnight, in certain streets of the city, making it compulsory for everyone to wear a mask in public spaces, he added.
