AGI – The Paris prosecutor has asked to reopen the investigation into the rape charges against actor Gerard Depardieu. The previous investigation had closed early last year.
In this case, the accusations are of a young actress who claims that the celebrated actor in August 2018 allegedly assaulted and raped her in her Parisian home. Aix-en-Provence investigators had opened a preliminary investigation, which was then passed on to colleagues in the French capital. Depardieu, 71, has always dismissed all charges.
In Paris, the investigation was stopped nine months later, after investigators had failed to gather enough evidence for a formal indictment. But now the actress has restarted the procedure declaring herself “injured party” which, according to French law, almost always leads to the examination by an investigating magistrate. Contact by AFP, Depardieu’s lawyer, Herve Temime, declined to comment.
Depardieu, who is a superstar thanks to films such as “Cyrano de Bergerac”, “L’Ultimo metro ‘” by Francois Truffaut and “Camille Claudel”, has also had a successful international career, working inter alia with Peter Weir in “Green Card” and with Ridley Scott in “1492”. It has French and Russian citizenship.
