Madrid, Aug 1 (EFE) .- The Civil Guard has arrested two people in A Coruña for marketing a false hydroalcoholic gel that they mixed with brandy and that were made in a clandestine laboratory, and 6,400 liters of the product already distributed in hospitals have been operated. and medical centers throughout Spain.

The product, which lacked disinfecting power, was purchased mainly by health centers and hospitals, which raised the alarm with several complaints after detecting the strong smell of brandy, the Armed Institute has reported in a statement.

Due to the urgent need for the product, the detainees – who offered themselves as chemists with extensive experience – were able to easily place it avoiding any documentary and quality requirements.

The gel only reached a percentage of 25% alcohol, instead of the 70% that corresponds to it, and the investigation found that the distribution company lacked the appropriate authorizations from the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products to manufacture it.

The two detainees in the Quimigel operation had their functions perfectly distributed for the commission of this criminal act, so that one of them was in charge of the commercial part and the management with the companies that acquired the product and the other was focused on manufacturing. and logistics.

In the registry in the poultry house where they set up the laboratory – located in Boiro (A Coruña) – the Civil Guard has found 400 liters of the false hydroalcoholic gel already packaged.

In addition, it has managed to seize 6,400 liters of the product already distributed in hospitals and medical centers throughout Spain.

The proceedings are in the Investigating Court number 2 of Ribeira.

The Quimigel operation has been led by the Territorial Team of the Judicial Police of Noia, belonging to the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police of A Coruña, in collaboration with the Spanish Medicines Agency and personnel from the Health Department of the Xunta de Galicia.
