US Weather Agency downgrades “Isaias” to tropical storm

However, meteorologists expect Isaias to regain strength overnight as it moves toward the southeastern coast of Florida.

Washington (dpa) – The cyclone “Isaias” has weakened, according to the US Weather Agency. In line with its strength, it was no longer classified as a hurricane on Saturday evening (local time) but as a tropical storm, according to a message from the National Hurricane Center.

The hurricane swept across parts of the Bahamas island chain, where a hurricane warning had been given, on Saturday and caused wind gusts of 120 kilometers per hour and more. He tore roofs from shelters in poor settlements and uprooted trees, and there were power cuts. For some residents, the memory of “Dorian”, a hurricane of the highest category 5, was still fresh from the previous year.

The Red Cross estimates that around 13,000 homes were badly damaged or destroyed at the time, and hundreds of people died. On some islands, residents still live in tents. According to official information, debris should still be cleared before the arrival of “Isaias”, which was moving towards the northwest at almost 20 km / h.

The US state of Florida was preparing for tidal waves, flooding and high wind speeds. The storm is forecast to not hit the U.S. mainland, but will have a noticeable impact.
