In the third free practice session at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, Mercedes made serious work for the first time and distanced the competition with Valtteri Bottas (Finland) and world champion Lewis Hamilton (England). In contrast, Sebastian Vettel in the bucking Ferrari did not come within striking distance in the last test before qualifying (Formula 1: qualifying in Silvestone on Saturday from 3 p.m. in LIVETICKER). Returnee Nico Hülkenberg did better. On Friday at very short notice to jump in at Racing Point for the Mexican Sergio Perez who tested positive for Corona, Hülkenberg drove the ninth-best time, but was still three tenths behind his team-mate Lance Stroll (Canada) in fourth place.

Vettel did not cope well with the changed external conditions on Saturday. He left the racing line several times, struggled with the wind and ended up more than half a second slower than his teammate Charles Leclerc (Monaco) in sixth.
