In northwest China more than 3,000 people fell ill after the “brucellosis” bacteria leaked from the Lanzhou Biopharmaceutical Unit for Livestock, which produces vaccines for animals.
The case happened in 2019, but only this year that the entity apologized for what happened, as well as its license was revoked.
Brucellosis is a disease transmitted by livestock or animal products. In general, it is not contagious to humans, but it can cause fevers, joint and head pain.
According to local authorities, patients will receive compensation starting in October.
According to the government, there was no human-to-human transmission. However, the laboratory sterilization was performed with an expired disinfectant, not completing the work.
Therefore, the bacteria were still present in the company’s gas emissions spread through the air and reached the Veterinary Research Institute, infecting almost 200 people.
