Sweden’s former biathlon coach Wolfgang Pichler is being treated in hospital after suffering from serious heart problems.
This is confirmed by the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK), where 65-year-old Pichler is employed as a talent developer.
– Our thoughts are with Wolfgang, says SOK’s business manager Peter Reinebo according to Expressen.
The condition of the success coach is described as serious but stable.
Pichler is said to have been acutely affected by heart problems when he was out on a bike ride near his hometown Ruhpolding this weekend, writes Aftonbladet.
– Wolfgang is a great leader in Swedish sports with an enormous dedication to everything he does, says Reinebo.
Pichler has for several decades contributed to great progress for Sweden’s best biathletes. He was national team manager when Sweden took two gold and two silver during the Olympics in Pyeongchang in 2018.
According to the German newspaper Bild, the 65-year-old has led athletes to a formidable 42 medals in the Olympics and the World Cup.
He ended his coaching career as late as last year. Now he is working to help future winter sports heroes emerge.
