Coronavirus, vaccine | New US vaccine candidate surprises

One of the USA’s largest pharmaceutical companies is now entering its final test phase – and can probably offer a surprise.

NEW YORK (Nettavisen): The company Johnson & Johnson is one of many drug companies in the US that are now working with a vaccine, but they now stand out in that they work with a vaccine that probably only needs one dose, and not two, reports New York Times.

– Does not need to be frozen

Unlike some of the competitors, Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine does not need to be frozen and may require only one syringe instead of two, the newspaper writes.

The newspaper also writes that although the company is a few months behind several other American companies in having reached the phase 3 trials, Johnson & Johnson’s trials will be the largest, where they plan to test the vaccine on 60,000 participants.

Doctor: – Fantastic

– It would be fantastic if we had something in a single dose, says doctor Judith Feinberg, deputy head of medical research at West Virginia University, to the newspaper.

Feinberg tells the New York Times that it is only a phase 3 test, which compares the effect of a vaccine with a placebo, which will be able to determine if it lasts with just a single dose.

The doctor says that if this turns out to be enough, then it could increase the speed of curbing the pandemic.

Trump cheers

The final test phase started on Monday and doctor Paul Stoffels, head of science at Johnson & Johnson, says the company will be able to determine during the year whether the vaccine is safe and effective.

The news from the New York Times makes President Trump cheer.

– Big news. Many great companies have amazing results. @FDA needs to move fast! writes the president on Twitter on Wednesday, about the news from the New York Times.

“Historical progress” with three vaccine candidates

Last week, Trump claimed that “historic progress” has been made with three vaccine candidates who are in the final stages of development and testing. At least 200 million doses can be produced by the end of the year, he claims.

“Hundreds of millions of doses will be available every month, and we expect to have enough vaccines for all Americans by April,” Trump said, according to NTB.
