In total, 1,000,009 deaths were officially recorded worldwide, for 33,018,877 cases, until 22:30 on Sunday.

AFP also said that 22,640,048 people were considered cured by the authorities.

The most affected regions, in terms of number of deaths, are Latin America and the Caribbean (341,032 deaths for 9,190,683 cases), Europe (229,945 deaths for 5,273,943 cases) and the United States and Canada (214,031 deaths for 7,258,663 cases) ).

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.

The United States is the country with the most deaths (204,499) and also with the most confirmed cases of infection (more than seven million).

Brazil, India, Mexico and the United Kingdom follow in death toll.

Russia, with 20,140 dead, is the fourth country in the world in number of infected, after the USA, India and Brazil, with more than 1.1 million cases, followed by Colombia, with more than 806 thousand cases and 25,296 killed, and Peru, with more than 800 thousand cases and 32,142 dead.

In Europe, the highest number of fatalities is registered in the United Kingdom (41,988 dead, more than 434 thousand cases), followed by Italy (35,835 dead, more than 309 thousand cases), France (31,727 dead, more than 538 thousand cases) and Spain (31,232 dead, more than 716 thousand cases).

In Portugal, 1,953 people died from 73,604 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health.
