There are already eight absences from Independiente del Valle to face Flamengo this Wednesday, in Maracanã, for the Copa Libertadores. In addition to the five positive cases of coronavirus previously announced, the Ecuadorian club confirmed that it had another player with the disease after a new examination and two more athletes who had symptoms. Even negative, the pair stayed out of the trip to Rio de Janeiro.
Del Valle claimed to have done an additional PCR exam last Monday as an extra precaution to the health rules and the Conmebol protocol. The player in question is quarantined and will follow the same procedure as the others, while the club has called the authorities.
On the 24th, Del Valle reported that a player had tested positive for the coronavirus. That number has grown to five with the four new infections released on Monday. And it rose to eight with the information released on Tuesday.
Flamengo and Independiente del Valle face off this Wednesday, at 21.30 (of Brasília), in Maracanã. The Ecuadorians lead Group A with the same nine points from Rubro-Negro – the advantage is in the goal difference: 8 to 0. Junior Barranquilla (6 points) and Barcelona (0 point) duel in Colombia at the same time.
The announcement of positive cases at Del Valle comes just over a week after the Ecuadorean team’s clash against Flamengo in Quito, when the hosts thrashed 5-0.
The following day, the Brazilian team detected the emergence of an outbreak of Covid-19 in its squad. Initially, seven players tested positive, before the game against Barcelona, in Guayaquil. And, after the second confrontation in Ecuador, the total number of infected players reached 16.
The outbreak in Flamengo ignited the alert in Del Valle and Barcelona, which faced athletes who had their infection detected the day after the matches. However, there were no positive cases in the tests carried out on the Ecuadorian teams right after the Libertadores games. The two teams, coincidentally, faced each other last Saturday for the Ecuadorian Championship.
Until last Sunday, Barcelona de Guayaquil had no confirmed case of Covid-19 in their squad, despite the clash against Flamengo in the last week, when the risk of contagion put the performance of the game in doubt. The team is expected to present results of further examinations before the trip to Colombia for the duel against Junior Barranquilla, also on Wednesday.
