With recent outbreaks in the country often related to weddings and other private events, Angela Merkel said that “a reaction is needed” to stop the spread of the virus.

Thus, any region where infection rates reach 35 per 100,000 people will be required to impose a maximum limit of 50 people at meetings in public spaces or rented places.

If infection rates are 50 per 100,000 people, then only 25 people will be allowed in public meetings.

The various federal states have not agreed on limits to be imposed on family gatherings and private parties at home, but Merkel said it was “strongly recommended” that people limit guest lists to just ten in each home in the most affected regions.

The chancellor also encouraged citizens to stay in Germany during the autumn school holidays, due to the rapid increase in infection rates in neighboring European countries.

In addition, Germany will impose fines of at least 50 euros if customers do not provide real contact information when dining at restaurantsto help track cases.
