Merkel expresses concern about increasing Covid-19 cases in Germany

Chancellor Angela Merkel is very concerned about the increase in cases of the new coronavirus in Germany, her spokesman said on Monday, who asked citizens to respect strict rules of hygiene and physical distance. “The evolution of the number of contagions is of great concern to us,” said Steffen Seibert. “We can see in our European neighbors where this can lead,” he added.

At a meeting with members of her CDU party, Merkel warned that the new cases – almost 2,000 daily newspapers today – could rise to 19,200 by Christmas if the trend continues, party sources told AFP.

Merkel’s warning comes the day before a video conference with authorities in Germany’s 16 federal states about the next steps that should be taken to try to control the epidemic, which may include family reunions.

Anyone wishing to participate in the meetings must register the name in advance to facilitate subsequent tracking in case of contagion. Germany officially records 285,332 cases of covid-19 (+1,192 cases in 24 hours) and 9,460 deaths (+3 in 24 hours), according to official data.
