About 900 people from a school in Bielefeld, in northwest Germany, including students and teachers, are quarantined after several cases of coronavirus were detected among students as a result of a family party.
Local health authorities reported 36 positive cases of covid-19 related to the celebration, ten of which are students from the school in question.
The party was held last week in a private space, according to a spokeswoman for the Bielefeld city hall, adding that contacts of positive cases began to be tracked last Friday.
The local broadcaster Radio Bielefeld says that the number of people affected may increase, as it has not yet been possible to identify all the people who had direct contact with those infected.
Parties in neighboring cities
New cases of coronavirus have also been reported in the neighboring city of Hamm. It is a separate outbreak from Bielefeld, but also as a result of a family celebration, a wedding with several hundred guests.
Finally, in Hünxe, the police interrupted a birthday party with 100 guests, as pandemic safety standards were not being met (safety distance, guest list to allow tracking). One of the guests was arrested for resisting arrest.
Bielefeld, Hamm and Hünxe belong to the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (west), which has the most cases of coronavirus (68,720) and the third with the highest number of deaths by covid-19 (1,865), after Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
