Belgian authorities, one of the European countries most affected by the new coronavirus, warned this Monday for an increase in the number of “quite alarming” cases, which can reach 10,000 daily at the end of the week.
“All indicators continue to rise, it must be said, quite alarmingly, in all provinces and age groups, ”said Yves Van Laethem, spokesman for the Belgian Crisis Center at Covid-19.
An average of 4,145 new daily cases of the disease was recorded in Belgium in the week of 2 to 8 October, an increase of 89% compared to the previous week, according to data released this Monday. On Wednesday alone, 6,500 new cases were recorded.
From Laethem indicou que “If the increase continues at the same pace, there could be 10,000 new cases daily by the end of this week.”
More than 162,200 people have been infected, 10,191 of whom have died since the start of the pandemic in Belgium, with a population of around 11.5 million.
Last week, the government tightened restrictions to limit contagion. Close contacts are limited to three people away from home and the bars and cafes in Brussels, which has registered more than 800 new cases daily, have been forced to close for at least a month.
The covid-19 pandemic, transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in China, has already caused more than one million and seventy-seven thousand deaths and more than 37.5 million cases of infection worldwide, according to one balance sheet of the France-Press agency.
