SAO PAULO (Reuters) – The Butantan Institute will send to the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) next Monday the results of tests in advanced stage in humans carried out in the country of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by the Chinese company Sinovac, which will be finalized by the institute this weekend, said the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB).
“The Butantan vaccine with Sinovac is the most advanced of the vaccines at this moment in the last stage of testing here in Brazil. It ends this week, this weekend, and on Monday the results will already be sent in full to Anvisa by Butantan Institute “, said Doria at a news conference this Thursday in Taboão da Serra, in Greater São Paulo, where she accompanied the start of testing for coronavirus in students and professionals in the education area.
Butantan has already sent documents from previous studies with Sinovac vaccine to Anvisa carried out in China, as part of a new procedure adopted by the regulatory agency to speed up the analysis of future applications for vaccine registrations.
The same procedure was also adopted to analyze the vaccine developed by the British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca with the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom, with which the federal government signed a supply agreement through the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation.
Neither vaccine has yet been approved by Anvisa, without which it cannot be applied to the population.
The governor of São Paulo also commented on the São Paulo government’s dealings with the Ministry of Health for the inclusion of the Sinovac vaccine in the national immunization program, after, the day before, the minister of the portfolio, General Eduardo Pazuello, met with state secretaries – – among them São Paulo, Jean Gorinchteyn – to address vaccination plans and not include the vaccine being tested by Butantan.
Doria recalled that she will go to Brasília on Wednesday to meet with Pazuello. He said he would be accompanied by parliamentarians and that, on occasion, he hopes to resolve the impasse. Gorinchteyn said the board of state health secretaries sent a letter to the portfolio asking for CoronaVac to be included in the program.
“We are going on a peacekeeping mission on the 21st, but with the certainty that we wish to have the vaccine, for Brazilians in São Paulo and for Brazilians in Brazil,” said Doria. “There is no doubt about the scientific question of the vaccine”, he guaranteed.
The governor, who is a political opponent of President Jair Bolsonaro, said that if there is no agreement with the federal government, the state administration will take all necessary measures to be able to vaccinate the population of São Paulo.
“There is no chance for the government of São Paulo, and I as governor, to accept any postponement placement, either from the Ministry of Health or Anvisa, so as not to start vaccination as soon as possible,” he said.
“To save lives, São Paulo will use all the necessary resources. First, in understanding, in the republican dialogue with the Ministry of Health and with Anvisa, technically. But if this does not happen, we will know how to use other mechanisms to enforce the vaccine for the Brazilians, at least those who live in São Paulo “, he assured.
