Corinthians ‘turned’ defeat at home only once in the Copa do Brasil; game has become historic

Corinthians lost in the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil, against América-MG, in the Neo Química Arena, and will need a turnaround in the confrontation next week, away from home, in Belo Horizonte. Historically, the retrospect is not very encouraging, but it would not be an unprecedented feat.

In all, Timão went after the confrontation playing the first at home on four occasions in the national tournament, but only managed to get classified in one of them. The historic record was in 1997, in the quarterfinals.

Facing today’s Athletico, Timão entered the field at Morumbi without being able to count on Marcelinho Carioca, suspended in almost the entire competition, and ended up being defeated by 2 to 1 by Paraná. The result seemed to consolidate the elimination of a promising team, which would end up being the São Paulo champion.

When the decision was played at the Pinheirão stadium, in Curitiba, however, the Parque São Jorge club, with an excellent performance by Donizete and Mirandinha, shot 6 to 2 over the opponent and ensured their presence in the semifinal of the competition.

The club ended up eliminated in the next stage, the semifinal, precisely in one of its falls in the current scenario. At that time, he lost 2-1 to Grêmio, at Morumbi, and was unable to revert at Olímpico: 1-1 draw and elimination.

The other occasions when this happened were in the 1992 edition, when Timão was beaten 4-0 by Internacional and practically only served in Beira-Rio, drawing 0-0, and last year, when he lost to Flamengo 1-0 in São Paulo and Rio.
