The United States registered 60,000 new infections on Wednesday, the highest daily number since August 14, with an increase in cases in all regions, especially in the Midwest.

Health experts have long warned that lower temperatures that cause people to stay indoors for longer can increase the spread of the virus.

US officials have not identified the reason for the recent increase in cases, but point to tiredness with Covid-19 precautionary measures and the return of students to schools and colleges.

According to an analysis by Reuters, 25 states have already set records for an increase in new cases in October.

All states in the Midwest and Northeast reported more cases in the past four weeks than in the previous four weeks, with the number of new cases doubling in states like Wisconsin, South Dakota and New Hampshire.
