A councilor from Carlópolis, in the northern region of Paraná, is the target of a temporary arrest warrant in the operation that investigates the sale of bariatric surgeries of SUS (Unified Health System), on the morning of this Thursday (29). In total, seven court orders must be fulfilled by the PCPR (Civil Police of Paraná).
According to the investigations, the councilman would have falsified SUS guides, allowing patients to be referred, mainly from the State of São Paulo, to undergo bariatric surgeries through SUS in a hospital in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba. According to the police, he worked with the doctors who signed these guides.
ORGANIZATION PROFITED MORE THAN R $ 10 MILLION FROM THE SALE OF BARIATRIC SURGERIES CARRIED OUT IN SUS
This is the second phase of the operation that investigates a criminal organization that would have profited more than R $ 10 million from the sale of bariatric surgeries performed by SUS, in a hospital in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba.
The police must carry out two temporary arrest warrants, one target being a councilor and candidate for reelection from the city of Carlópolis, and five search and seizure warrants. Court orders are being enforced in the municipalities:
- Santo Antônio da Platina;
- All municipalities in the North Pioneer of the State;
- Colombo, in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba;
The criminal organization is investigated for the crimes of extortion, misrepresentation, use of false documents, concussion and criminal organization. The MP’s name was not released by the PCPR.
CRIMINAL GROUP CONTACTED PATIENTS THROUGH SOCIAL NETWORKS
The criminal group, through social networks or referrals, contacted people from several Brazilian states (mostly from SP and SC), interested in performing bariatric surgery. The patients, many times, had been waiting in line for years to be operated by SUS, and ended up accepting to pay up to R $ 3,000 in surgeries that should be free.
Investigations also point out that the criminal group would be able to receive double the amounts paid by SUS to the hospital for bariatric surgeries.
FIRST PHASE OF METAMORPHOSIS OPERATION
The first phase of Operation Metamorphosis was launched on October 6, when 16 members of the criminal organization were arrested. Among the prisoners, there is a state civil servant, stationed at the 2nd Regional Health, in Paraná, a councilor from the interior of the state of São Paulo, doctors, nursing technicians, owners of inns and people who worked in capturing future patients.
On the day, the Angelina Caron Hospital, identified by the investigations as the place where the bariatric surgeries took place, stated that it does not carry out any type of patient collection for the procedures performed by SUS and does not benefit directly or indirectly from any fraudulent scheme.
In addition, the administration revealed that it registered two police reports in the Campina Grande do Sul Police Station, in May 2019 and in January 2020, about complaints received about collection and privilege of care in the case of a patient who is a candidate for surgery. bariatric.
