SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) – Brazil recorded 461 new deaths by Covid-19 and 22,097 cases of the disease, this Saturday (17). As a result, the country reached 153,690 deaths and 5,223,667 people infected with the new coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic.
In addition to the consortium’s daily data, Folha de S.Paulo also shows the so-called moving average. The statistical resource seeks to give a better view of the evolution of the disease, as it attenuates isolated numbers that deviate from the pattern. The moving average is calculated by adding the result of the last seven days, dividing by seven.
According to the data collected until 8 pm, the average number of deaths in the last seven days is 493, which represents a scenario of decline from the average of 14 days ago. Recently, the country was in a situation of falling from the average, but then it returned to the level of stability of the death data.
The data are the result of an unprecedented collaboration between Folha, UOL, O Estado de S. Paulo, Extra, O Globo and G1 to gather and disclose the numbers related to the pandemic of the new coronavirus. The information is collected directly from the state Health Departments.
Brazil has a rate of 73.2 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants. The United States, which has the highest absolute number of deaths (218,448), and the United Kingdom (43,519), both ahead of Brazil in the pandemic (ie, started to suffer from the problem before), have 66.9 and 65 , 5 dead for every 100 thousand inhabitants, respectively.
The country has also exceeded Italy’s death rate per 100,000 inhabitants (60.3). Saturday’s Ministry of Health bulletin also showed that Brazil registered 461 new deaths due to the new coronavirus in the last 24 hours. The country now accounts for a total of 153,675 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, in the federal government accounts.
The government’s balance points to 24,062 new cases, totaling 5,224,362 records of the disease in the country. Among the states, São Paulo still has the highest total number of records – there are 37,992 deaths and 1,062,634 cases until this Saturday. Next in the list, with respect to deaths, are the states of Rio de Janeiro (19,715), Ceará (9,207) and Pernambuco (8,480).
The data also show that there are 4,635,315 people recovered from the disease and 2,302 deaths under investigation.
The initiative of the media consortium occurs in response to the attitudes of the Jair Bolsonaro government (without a party), which threatened to withhold data, delayed newsletters about the disease and removed information from the air, with the interruption of the disclosure of total cases and deaths. In addition, the government released conflicting data.
