A study by researchers at the Pontifical Catholic University of ParanĂ¡ (PUCPR) reveals that Covid-19, caused by the new coronavirus, is also considered a vascular disease, in addition to being a lung disease. According to the research, carried out on samples of patients who died of the disease, there were lesions in the cells that line blood vessels in the lungs.

According to vascular surgeon Gustavo Solano, a member of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, this type of injury can lead to thrombosis. “Also known as Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT), this disease is the formation of a blood clot inside one or more veins in the body. In 90% of cases, the condition reaches the lower limbs and causes great discomfort, but there is risk of a fragment of the clot breaking off and entering the blood stream, towards the lungs, causing a picture of pulmonary embolism, which can lead to death. graduated compression, among other procedures “, he explains.

For people who have already had or have a picture of thrombosis or other venous diseases, such as varicose veins, for example, the specialist warns of the greater need to prevent contamination by the new coronavirus, in addition to increasing attention to vascular health and using frequency, graduated compression stockings or cannellites, which stimulate blood flow and prevent the formation of these clots. The doctor, who is also a partner of SIGVARIS GROUP – a leading Swiss company in graduated compression accessories -, states that “these people need to avoid as much as possible any exposure to the new coronavirus and follow all hand hygiene recommendations, due to the greater risks of serious complications. It is also important that the treatment of thrombosis or varicose veins is not interrupted if the person already has one of these diseases or has a family history of venous diseases, even if he does not yet present symptoms “, he says.

“Covid-19 can damage a thin layer of cells, called the endothelium, which protects the blood vessel to prevent thrombosis. Without this layer, blood clots and obstructs circulation. In the lung, in addition to protecting the blood vessel against clotting , the endothelium is responsible for promoting gas exchange, helping the lung’s air to enter the bloodstream. Without the endothelium, the patient’s clinical situation may worsen until he or she dies “, concludes the doctor.
