The massive testing campaign, which began on Sunday and which authorities hope to complete in five days, resulted in the collection of 9.9 million samples, according to Luan Xin, the city council’s vice president.

The official guaranteed that no additional positive case was detected among the 7.6 million results already obtained.

The outbreak, detected this weekend, has so far made 13 patients, said Luan.

In total, local authorities intend to track up to 9.4 million inhabitants and 1.5 million visitors. Qingdao is a coastal and touristic city, known for the beer brand “Tsingtao”.

The testing campaign was launched after the discovery, over the weekend, of several positive cases linked to the city’s Lung Disease Hospital, which was in charge of caring for patients with covid-19 arriving in the country from abroad.

The 13 cases of local transmission identified so far in Qingdao, the first since mid-August in China, resulted in the resignation of the hospital’s president, who was placed under investigation, according to the Municipal Health Commission.

Most of the cases are linked to this establishment, but the authorities have not yet detailed the origin of the outbreak, which ended almost two months without cases of local infection in China.

The director of the Qingdao Health Commission, responsible for medical care in the city, was also “suspended” from his duties.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than one million and eighty-seven thousand deaths and more than 38.2 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
