The director-general of Health, Graça Freitas, admitted, this Friday, that there is, at this moment, “enormous pressure on public health facilities”, which is why, “starting next week”, students of the last year of Nursing will reinforce the public health teams to carry out epidemiological surveys.
It is obvious that, at the moment, there is enormous pressure on public health services. We have many patients, many cases and the epidemiological investigation implies that for each case that is found and diagnosed, you go looking for your contacts. And these contacts have to be divided into two groups: high-risk contacts, who are in prophylactic isolation; and low-risk contacts, who do not need to be in isolation, but must comply with measures of social distance and hygiene. It is a huge workload, because for each patient an accurate epidemiological investigation is needed “, he explained, at the press conference to assess the epidemiological situation in Portugal.
Due to the current situation, and at a time when new cases of covid-19 continue to increase, the Ministry of Health asked the Ministry of Higher Education so that students in the last year of the Nursing course can join the public health teams, under the supervision of teachers.
Public health teams are being strengthened. There was a contact from the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Higher Education so that, through nursing schools, students from the last years, accompanied by their teachers, can do internships in these public health units, receiving training, in a first phase of DGS to help public health teams, always under supervision, to carry out epidemiological surveys and detect contacts as soon as possible, isolate and monitor them “, specified.
Graça Freitas reiterated that “there is, in fact, a lot of pressure”, but that are “steps taken to strengthen public health teams, with more people, more capacity to conduct investigations and more quickly”, being that “people when they stay at home also have to be accompanied”.
It’s a big workload “he repeated.
However, the Director-General for Health specified that, “for a while”, have not yet lost control of the transmission chains.
We still managed to find at least 60% of the people in the first stage of the survey who can still tell who they contracted the disease from. And then, when we go deeper, this number increases. At this moment, we are still able to know who has infected whom, which is a positive fact, even if the situation is worrying “, indicated.

The Secretary of State for Health, Diogo Serras Lopes, present at the conference, also indicated that, to date, 1.683 billion downloads of STAYAWAY COVID application, with 179 codes inserted.
Portugal registered today, and for the third consecutive day, a record daily covid-19 cases.
It is recalled that the Government announced the proposal mandatory download of this application, a measure that will have to be approved by the Assembly of the Republic, after raising the alert level in Portugal to Disaster Situation due to the covid-19 pandemic.
DGS reviews authorization for public presence at sporting events
DGS is reviewing the authorization for the presence of the public at sporting events, in particular at the Portuguese Formula 1 and MotoGP Grand Prix, admitting its reduction.
DGS is reviewing the programming in terms of the public at sporting events, depending on the evolution of the epidemiological situation and the region of the country [onde se vão realizar], which is not uniform ”, said Graça Freitas.
The presence of spectators in sports shows is, therefore, “To be equated according to the country’s area”.
“I always said that all public situations at sporting events had to do with the type of event and the epidemiological situation. At the moment, both issues are being considered according to the region of the country and the incidence of cases in that region ”, reinforced the Director-General of Health.
The DGS had already given a favorable opinion, but without establishing numbers, to the presence of the public at the Portuguese Grand Prix of Formula 1, which will take place between 23 and 25 October, at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão, with capacity for close of 100,000 viewers.
