The D-Day of vaccination against measles and polio takes place in Fortaleza this Saturday (17th). The action promoted by the City of Fortaleza, through the Municipal Health Secretariat (SMS), focuses on adults between 20 and 49 years old who have not taken the two doses of the vaccine, or who have an incomplete vaccination schedule, in addition to children of 1 to 4 years and 11 months.
The immunization takes place in 114 health posts in the Capital, and another 30 strategic points, such as supermarkets, schools and associations, between 8 am and 4:30 pm, as announced by the SMS this Friday (16). However, the campaign continues until October 31, as extended by the Ministry of Health to interrupt the virus transmission chain in the country. In 2020, about 21 states presented cases.
The disease that was responsible for the first epidemic in Ceará, in 1615, has the main preventive measure in vaccination. From March until the beginning of October, the State has already applied 186,089 doses of the vaccine to the target audience.
The triple viral vaccine, which acts against measles, mumps and rubella, has a vaccination schedule that comprises two doses: the first at 12 months and the second at 15 months, with tetraviral (measles-mumps-rubella-chickenpox).
Measles scenario in Ceará
In Ceará, until the end of September, seven cases of measles were registered, while in the same period of the previous year, there were 15 confirmed cases. This year, one cases were reported in February and six in March, and all were “imported from other states”. The records are from the municipalities of Cariré and Farias Brito, in the interior of the state.
Despite the 53.3% reduction in the number of positive diagnoses in the State, viral infection requires attention due to its high rate of transmissibility. The person infected with Measles morbillivirus virus, which causes measles, can transmit it to up to 18 other people. Transmission that can occur by air when coughing, sneezing, talking or breathing nearby.
D-Day will also focus on vaccination against polio, a disease that causes childhood paralysis. The goal of SMS is to immunize about 135 thousand children, aged 1 to 4 years, 11 months and 29 days against the disease.
Although the disease has already been eradicated in Brazil, in other countries it has not yet been, and the SMS immunization coordinator, Vanessa Soldatelli emphasizes the importance of vaccination. “Polio is a very serious disease. As long as we have the circulation of the virus, we must continue vaccinating our children ”, highlights Vanessa Soldatelli.
In addition, the municipal network offers 14 vaccines for children: BCG, Hepatitis B, Rotavirus, Pentavalent, Inactivated Polio, Valiant Pneumococcal 10, Meningitis C, Triple Viral, Hepatitis A, Tetravalent, Oral Polio, Triple Bacterial – DTP and Yellow Fever ). And five for teenagers, who are HPV, Meningitis C, Triple Viral, Hepatitis B and Double Bacterial – Diphtheria and Tetanus.
