Among the new prisoners are two parents of students at the institute where the teacher worked. According to the investigation, they argued with the educator because of the cartoon of Muhammad displayed in the classroom.

Three people close to the attacker and four of his relatives, including a minor, were also arrested.

The case happened on Friday, around 5 pm local time (12 pm Brasília), close to the school where the teacher taught in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, a small town of 35,000 inhabitants 50 kilometers from Paris.

According to French police sources, the man who committed the crime was an 18-year-old Chechen Russian. The agents say they tried to arrest him after the attack, but he was aggressive, so it was necessary to open fire and kill him.

France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, visited the scene and called it an Islamist terrorist attack.

“One of our countrymen was murdered because he taught his students about freedom of expression, freedom to believe or not to believe,” said Macron. “It is no accident that it was a teacher that this terrorist killed. Because he wanted to kill the republic in its values, the lights, the possibility of making our child citizens free.”

France’s National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation for “murder in connection with a terrorist endeavor” and “criminal terrorist association”.
