Closed since March due to the covid-19 pandemic, the Friendship Bridge, on the border of Brazil with Paraguay, reopens from this Thursday, 15. But not all Brazilians can pass.
According to the health protocol of the neighboring country, the ticket is valid only for the twin cities of Foz do Iguaçu and Ciudad del Este. In other words, only people with identity cards issued in the Brazilian city are allowed to cross the border.
The border is open between 5 am and 2 pm, only for vehicles. The Paraguayan government has said it will not inspect all cars, but does a random check to verify the documentation. The use of a mask is mandatory. Walking, which is very common on the bridge, remains prohibited.
For tourists, international medical insurance is required which includes tests of covid-19 and ICU admissions. The departure can be done at any time. For tourists and merchants, circulation is permitted within a radius of up to 30 kilometers from Cidade do Leste.
The measure is valid for 15 days, when Paraguay will assess whether it changes the rules. The Paraguayan government has not yet decided whether it will reopen the border in the cities of Pedro Juan Caballero and Salto del Guairá, both on the border with Mato Grosso do Sul.
On the Brazilian side, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not defined the rules for Paraguayans who want to enter Brazil. President Jair Bolsonaro even announced that he would be reopening the Friendship Bridge, along with Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benítez, but the meeting was canceled.
