Luxembourg dismissed from Palmeiras after three straight defeats

A few minutes after losing to Coritiba, the direction of Palm Trees announced the resignation of Vanderlei Luxemburgo. The coach was dismissed this Wednesday, after the 3-1 setback, at Allianz Parque, for the 16th round of the Brazilian championship. It was the third consecutive setback in the competition. Thus, he ended his fifth stint at the club and left the team alive with a title won this season, that of the Campeonato Paulista. His contract was valid until the end of 2021.

“After the departure this Wednesday (14th), the alviverde board met at the Football Academy and decided not to remain in the position. Palmeiras thanks Luxembourg for the work developed in his fifth visit to the club, in which he won the 2020 Paulista Championship, ”announced the São Paulo club.

Luxembourg had been rocking in office for a few days now. Criticism of his work has existed since Paulistão. The questions, before, had no relation to the results. They were related to technically presented poor football, with great difficulty in the creation of plays and limited offensive repertoire.

Charges were intensified after Palmeiras lost the unbeaten record of 20 games when they were defeated by Botafogo, in Engenhão, and the environment worsened even more with the 2-0 setback for São Paulo, which represented the first defeat of the team alviverde in Choque-Rei playing at Allianz Parque. Against Coritiba, the men in Luxembourg performed very poorly and were dominated by their rival, who occupies the relegation zone.

Highly charged, the coach even questioned the quality of the squad when he said he did not know if the team could play offensively, promised to resume “ugly football, but with results”, from the time of Paulistão, but did not throw in the towel and denied that the work was bad. Internally, President Mauricio Galiotte, averse to change, resisted the pressure of resignation as long as he could.

The 68-year-old coach spent ten months at the helm in his fifth spell at the club. There were 36 matches, with 17 wins, 14 draws and five losses. The accumulation of equality, incidentally, was also part of the criticism of the fans.

Luxembourg has 411 matches for Palmeiras and is the third coach who most often headed the club, behind only Luiz Felipe Scolari (484) and Oswaldo Brandão (586). Five-time São Paulo champion for the alviverde team (1993, 1994, 1996, 2008 and 2020), he is the coach who most raised state mugs for the team.
