Mazda’s first electric vehicle (VE), the compact SUV MX-30, uses Portuguese cork in the center console. Presented now in Porto, it is one of the cheapest EVs on the market and can cost companies 23 thousand euros.
Explaining the genesis of the name, Luís Morais, director of Mazda Portugal, stressed that the MX always represented “special challenges” for the brand, giving as an example the MX-5, launched at a time when brands abandoned accessible sports and became the best-selling roadster of all time.
“The MX-30 intends to challenge conventions and is our first bet on VE, which is where the market is heading, although we do not neglect other segments”, said Luís Morais, director of Mazda Portugal, during the presentation of the new model, which took place at Alfândega do Porto, during the Hybrid and Electric Motor Show.
The MX-30 is, admittedly, a cityman, despite its dimensions leading to the contrary. It has a lithium-ion battery of 35.5 kWh, which allows a range of 265 kilometers in an urban circuit (200 kilometers in the combined cycle, which mixes city with extra-urban circuit), “which we consider sufficient for daily use” .
“Many families already have two cars and this can be used for daily trips, enter the home, the children’s school and work,” said Luís Morais.
The first VE of the brand, which follows Mazda’s stylistic language, with pleasant aesthetics, therefore, visually breaks with the two rear doors, called Freestyle, of smaller dimensions that open in the opposite direction of the march, eliminating the B-pillar and providing unobstructed access to the cabin. In theory, as the access to the rear seats requires some gymnastics, although the front seats recline, but nothing that the habit (or some care) does not solve.
The MX-30 is 4.39m long, 2.03m wide between mirrors and 1.55m high. The luggage compartment, which includes a storage space under the floor, has a capacity of 366l, reaching 1,171l up to the roof with the rear seats folded.
It weighs 1,645 kilos and has a power of 107 kW (about 145 horses), providing a maximum torque of 270 Nm. Sufficient numbers to accelerate to 0/100 km (in 9.7 seconds) and to reach 140 km / (car speed).
With regard to the battery (liquid-cooled), the brand guarantees that, in a wallbox, full charging takes 5.45 hours (15.25 hours if it is a simple household outlet) and in a quick charging station it takes 35 minutes to reach 80% . The battery has a warranty of eight years or 160 thousand kilometers.
The new MX-30 has a variety of safety equipment and we cannot fail to mention the maintenance assistant in the lane who can “see” the edges or shoulders, even when the markings on the floor are barely noticeable or do not exist.
It also has Smart Brake Support (SBS), in order to help prevent collisions at intersections, recognition of traffic signs, braking with pedestrian detection and blind spot detector.
Highlight for auditory feedback, provided through the audio system, which helps the driver to control the speed of the vehicle with greater precision. It is known that EVs are extremely quiet even when driving and it is very easy to lose track of the speed at which we roll, as we do not have the noise of the revolutions rising from the combustion engine.
The MX-30 reproduces that noise inside the car, allowing the driver to understand what pace he is driving and the speed at which he is driving.
Mazda paid special attention to reducing the MX-30’s ecological footprint, proving that cork, of Portuguese origin, used in the center console, using only that resulting from the surplus production of bottle stoppers.
Being a material that is naturally soft to the touch and cushioned, it was applied to sections of the center console tray and to the door handles.
Likewise, this material is used (up to 20%) in some of the seat fabrics and the door panels use fibers from recycled plastic bottles.
One of the color schemes proposed for the cabin, “Vintage Industrial”, combines brown leather with 20% recycled fabric, denim fabric and a darker color finish.
Prices start, at this launching stage and until December 31st, at 29,700 euros. For a company, and since electric vehicles are exempt from VAT, the price will be 26,595 euros to which they will have to deduct three thousand euros, a brand incentive equal to what the State gives for the purchase of electric vehicles by private individuals.
