Seven months after confirmation of the first Covid-19 case in Brazil, only six cities remain without confirmed cases of the disease. Four of them are in Minas Gerais: Botumirim, in the Northern Region; Cedro do Abaeté, in the Central Region; Pedro Teixeira, in the Zona da Mata, and São Thomé das Letras, in the south of the state.

Small Laranjal, with just over 6,000 inhabitants, is the only city in Paraná free of coronavirus. The city does not have a hospital and, to avoid contagion, sanitary measures were reinforced, including for the 300 residents who travel 100 km, every day, to work in another municipality.

In southern Brazil, in addition to Laranjal, a city in the state did not register the disease. Most of the 4,000 residents of Cerro Branco live in the countryside. Health workers, sound cars and a radio give guidance on Covid-19.
In Minas, the historic and touristy São Thomé das Letras is famous for its natural beauty and for being part of a mystical itinerary. The city used to receive visitors from all over Brazil, but tourists were banned from entering it in March to protect residents.

The city also installed sanitary barriers, which operate 24 hours a day, at the entrances that give access to the municipality. The reopening ended up in court and, on Thursday (15), a new decision determined that the city should receive tourists again.
“The city can only receive 20% of the capacity of beds available in the municipality. Here in the city we do not have a hospital. Only this UBS, which is a basic care unit. We do not have an ICU bed, respirator, we do not. We only have a respirator for just transporting the patient, “said the city’s Health Surveillance coordinator.
According to infectologist Unaí Tupinambás, professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the physical and demographic characteristics of these places and the actions taken by government officials end up avoiding the registration of cases.

“They are places that have a low population density. Of course, that alone would not be enough, the options of local managers make all the difference. We have seen this all over the world. When the manager has a very tough posture regarding the issue of these non-pharmacological measures, such as social distance, wearing a mask and avoiding crowding, we have seen that there is great success in this confrontation ”, he said.
