Passenger drop at airports reaches 65.9% in August | Coronavirus

During the month of August 2.2 million passengers disembarked at national airports, which represents a year-on-year drop of 65.9%. According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), passenger movement continues to recover from the even more pronounced falls in July (minus 79.5%) and June (minus 94.6%), but remains in very negative terrain.

The relevance of the UK market in issuing travelers to Portugal is very evident in the data released this Friday by INE, from the analysis of the number of passengers disembarked on flights from that country.

The number of passengers disembarking at national airports on flights from the United Kingdom decreased by 69.1% (minus 85.5% in July), with the announcement of the inclusion of Portugal in the list of safe countries to travel (on the day 20 de Agosto) contributed to a smaller reduction in the number of passengers disembarked between 21 and 31 August (47.2% less), when compared to that registered between 1 and 20 August (79.7% less).

The movement of cargo and mail at national airports totaled 10.4 thousand tons, corresponding to a decrease of 38.9% (47.8% less in July and 54.1% less in June).

Considering the three airports with the highest passenger traffic, Faro airport showed the greatest decrease in the number of passengers handled between January and August 2020 (77.1% less compared to the same period in 2019).
