Queen Sofia’s significant presence at the Princess of Asturias awards

In 2020, few events were able to maintain their original formats. Due to the pandemic, many were canceled, postponed, or at least modified, in place or number of guests. This is the case with the delivery of the Princess of Asturias Awards, which are celebrated this Friday, October 16, and which this year will take place in a different space with very few guests.

Two of the most relevant figures in the last edition of these awards – in which the princess Leonor spoke for the first time – it was the grandmothers, the queen Sofia e Paloma Rocasolano, who traveled to the Campoamor Theater, in Oviedo, so as not to miss this important step in their granddaughter’s life. For the emeritus queen, this is an important event, which she never missed, having also been present on the day when her son, the then prince Felipe, spoke for the first time at these awards in 1981.

During last year’s speech, the heiress princess, who was then 13 years old, dedicated a few words to her paternal grandmother, thanking her for attending the event. “She knows how important her presence is at this ceremony, which means so much to Asturias and to all of Spain”, he said, while looking at the place where his grandmother sat, who smiled at him.

The queen’s presence in this 39th edition of the awards has already been confirmed, despite taking place in different ways from previous years. This time, the awards ceremony takes place in the Covadonga room at the Hotel Reconquista, in Oviedo, and it is planned that only the winners and some authorities will be able to witness the princess’s speech live. The remaining guests, a very restricted group, will be distributed in other rooms of the hotel, where they can follow the delivery of prizes through a screen. It is noteworthy that in previous years this event reached 1300 guests.

The presence of Queen Sofía has a different importance this year, since it is the first time that the queen emerita has met in public with the kings since January. The last time they met was during the funeral of Infanta Pilar, which took place at the beginning of the year. Since then, many things have happened in the royal family, from the change in the holidays in Palma de Mallorca, during which time she usually spends a lot of time with her granddaughters, until King Juan Carlos leaves the country.

The princess’s maternal grandmother, Paloma Rocasolano, should also be present at the event. It should be recalled that Letizia’s mother was visibly moved during much of her granddaughter’s speech last year, especially in the part where the princess mentioned that Asturias is her mother’s land and that she too has Asturian blood.

Remember the princess speech last year!
