Portugal may return to a state of emergency in the coming days, given the rampant evolution of new cases of covid-19. SOL found that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and António Costa already talked about the possibility of a state of emergency being decreed again. The President warned yesterday of the need for the «Government to act» in the face of the worsening of the pandemic and the Prime Minister himself, yesterday afternoon, admitted that the head of State may have to consider the use of this drastic measure.
Experts heard by SOL predict that next week “the number of new daily cases of covid-19 in the northern region alone will pass 2000 and it is not impossible for it to reach 3000”. Experts acknowledge that the situation is now “explosive” in several health facilities in the country, with a particular focus on the north. On the other hand, the same experts are unanimous in considering that without new measures and much more restrictive the situation will continue to worsen in a very worrying way. In addition, the worsening weather conditions – with cold and rain – further complicate matters.
