American tennis player Sam Querrey fled a hotel in St. Petersburg, where he was confined after having two positive tests for the new coronavirus, boarding a private jet with his family, the organization of the Open of that city announced on Thursday.
As explained by the organizing committee of the ATP tournament, Querrey, 33 years old and 49 in the world ranking, and the family had a positive test on 11 October, confirmed in a second test, and were confined in a hotel unit, with the authorities to recommend medical tests to everyone.
After the American’s refusal, they suggested transferring him to an apartment, but before he was subjected to a new test, he left the hotel with his family during the early hours of Tuesday and left Russian territory on board an airplane private.
He did not inform the hotel reception, nor did he warn the organization, which put possible sanctions on the player for consideration by the ATP. The St. Petersburg Open will be played this year, for the first time, in the ATP 500 category, with a 50% audience at the Sibur-Arena.
