Samuel Paty, 47, was a history and geography teacher at the school in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, northwest of the French capital, Paris. He lost his life this Friday night after being beheaded by an 18-year-old in a crime that is being investigated as a terrorist attack.

According to the newspaper The Guardian, Earlier this month, Paty showed her young students a caricature of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo during a civic education class on freedom of expression.

According to the same newspaper, the father of a 13-year-old student called the rest of the parents in charge of a collective action against the professor, after the latter showed him a “photograph of a naked man”, claiming to be the “Muslim prophet”. The school then organized a meeting between the principal, the teacher concerned and a representative of the education authorities. When going to the authorities, Samuel said that the student in question would not have been in the class in which the caricature would have been shown.

According to French anti-terrorist prosecutor Jean-François Ricard, “the teacher strongly contested and asked Muslim students to identify themselves [com a caricatura] to leave the class “. This Friday, while making his way between the school and his home, the teacher was attacked by a man, eventually losing his life.

Ricard revealed that the attacker, who reportedly shouted “Allah is great” when he was shot down by the police, also published a “macabre” photo of the victim on the social network Twitter. The account was then closed.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited the crime scene last Friday night. ”This was a cowardly attack on one of our countrymen. He was the victim of a typical terrorist attack, ”the president said in remarks to journalists.
